Two days
The first meeting maps an autopilot: the reactive pattern of thought, emotion, and behavior in one area of life. The second meeting changes it. Most groups meet two days in a row, or skip a day between.
Meeting 1 — Autopilot internals
Each participant identifies an autopilot and takes it apart far enough to catch it in real time.
- Triggers: events and situations that switch the autopilot on.
- Stories: your interpretation of what happened. What you think, feel, and do depends on the story you tell.
- Beliefs: why different people tell different stories about the same situation. Beliefs frame stories, and stories reinforce beliefs.
- Character: a face for the autopilot, so you can recognize it while it is running.
Meeting 2 — Upgrading
We move from mapping the autopilot to changing it.
- Cost and benefit: what you get from running it, and what it costs. Seeing its reasoning opens a more thoughtful path than only trying to shut it off.
- Upgrades: role models, questioning beliefs, more empowering stories, new behaviors, removing or reframing triggers.
- Visualization: imagine the issue handled in the best possible way.
- A feedback loop: the new behavior has to increase the benefit of running it, or the old one returns.
